Rusting sampler

Happy, happy -- summer is here!! Vancouver is a dream in summer. We are blessed with minimum humidity and very fresh air. And although I enjoy my Vitamin D fix, I also enjoy spending a bit of time indoors in the evenings to continue with my projects.

Recently I created this sampler, below, to test how rusting on cotton could work in a composition. After I rusted some objects onto a cotton swatch, I stretched the cotton onto a wooden palette (available at most art stores which sell stretched canvas) adhering it with clear acrylic medium.

Next I divided the surface area in half to create a textural contrast -- paint vs fabric. My goal was to relax into this sampler experience as a mark-making exercise and not to over think the composition. I focused on layering my paint and incorporated stencils and a bit of collage. I also scribbled in pencil to contrast the symmetrical division of the surface.

What I enjoyed most about this sampler was the unplanned design process. I generally have a plan for each piece before I begin regardless how it evolves. This sampler permitted me the freedom to try without a preconceived agenda.

I feel like I'm really embracing the lazy days of summer! Happy creating and happy summer.

Making Allies

It all started back in the Spring… I was contact by a start-up online option to buying and renting art. No fees up front. Standard commission. I joined.  ArtsAlly.com  officially launched last month. Today I received a few txts from friends congratulating me on my up & coming "hot, local artist" status. Turns out vancitybuz z featured the site and all its artists…including yours truly (#17)! Needless to say I'M PRETTY PUMPED ABOUT THAT.  Please give it a read & pass the sets to your pals. Cheers ArtAlly; I wish you a successful life! OK, I gotta go now and start making more great art. Hopefully I'll move up to #1 ; ) Keep creating! ~ Kathryn

Strutting Creativity

Last night I was fortunate to attend the Museum of Vancouver's opening of Fox, Fluevog & Friends . It's a retrospective of Vancouver's own Fluevog phenomenon. However, I'd like to talk about not what I saw at the exhibit, but rather what I felt: I felt energized. To me, the exhibit celebrates Creativity Expressed. Creating from that deep place of need. Expressing that need like two new lovers in lust - exploding and spilling over with raw, unbridled energy. To me, that is LIVING. Experiences like that reenergize my own creativity. I came home jazzed up with new ideas as well as a "solution" to a block I was having with a painting. I couldn't wait to get into my own stuff. Cheers to both the MOV and those who inspired the exhibit. I encourage you to check it out and celebrate these locals who daily strut their creativity.
